MUNICIPALITY OF LAC-DES-PLAGES
Originally, the Municipality of Lac-des-Plages was called Lac Désormeaux. After it changed to Lac Rond and finally it became Lac-des-Plages.
The Municipality
of Lac-des-Plages is located in the administration region of the
Outaouais and is part of the MRC
of Papineau.
It obtained its legal status in 1950. Covering an
area of 121.72 square kilometers the Municipality
is located at
the North-East limit of th MRC. It's bound at the south by the
municipalities of Ponsonby,
Suffolk & Addington and Vinoy, at
the West by Duhamel, at the North by the MRC Antoine-Labelle and
Des Laurentides, as well as the municipalities of Suffolk &
Addington and finally at the East by the
MRC Des Laurentides and
the Municipality of Suffolk & Addington.
The population of the Municipality of Lac-des-Plages totals 416 persons and the land assessments exceeds 36 million dollars.
Originally
based on forest resource, the economy rapidely turned to the
recreative potential of its territory,
which is a normal
phenomenon knowing the physical environment of the Laurentian.
With an
81% proportion of secondary residences, the recreative activities
practiced around the periphery of the lakes of lac des-Plages,
Lévesque and Maskinongé, as well as along the Maskinongé River
constitutes the main source of revenue for the Municipality.
Origin of visitors : A strong representation from Montréal :
More than
half of the visitors to the county are from the metropolitan
region of Montréal.
The region of the National Capital
represents around 22.6% of the total of visitors.
The forestry sector : A fair proportion of the land belongs to the public domain
In regards
to the sugarbushes on the territory of the municipality, there
are seven which total around 12 000 maple syrup trees.
The
sugarbushes are located on private land and some are open to the
public and groups during maple syrup season.
Community Equipement and Public Services :
The main building which used to
serve as the local school now lodges the City Hall with the municipal offices, a public library
with access to High Speed Internet, a community hall, as well as other locals
for different organisations. The building also lodges a fire hall
with two fire trucks, and at the back of the building, you will find a park for
summer activities and an open skating rink for winter activities.
Next to the municipal building, you will find the catholic church servicing the
Saint-André parish. And a kilometer away, you will find the post office.
Finally
the Municipality has a service for pick up of garbage refuse which is
sent to the municipal dump (until Fall 2008)
located to the North of
Lac-des-Plages. It also now offers the pick up of recyclable materials.
